Sony announced the formation of the new Division ForwardWorks that will bring the best titles for the PlayStation on iOS devices from Apple and Android.
It is a very important news for gamers, who perhaps have waited for a long time. But wait to sing victory.
ForwardWorks, what is the name of the new arm of Sony that will take care of mobile gaming, will focus on developing games for only a few markets: Japan and Asia. At least initially, as announced by Sony. An odd choice and questionable since for the biggest job is complete-game development.
However, the new Division ForwardWorks will be officially created on April 1, the same date on which Sony Computer Entertainment becomes in effect Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Atsushi Morita, Chief of SCE in Japan and Asia, will head Forward Works. Other leaders of the newly formed group are Andrew House, who is Group CEO of SCE.
Sony said that ForwardWorks “Will leverage on the intellectual property of the many dedicated PlayStation software titles and its characters of the game, as well as the knowledge and know-how of development experience of games.”. The goal of ForwardWorks is to give players a chance to “enjoy full fledged games”. The Division also plans to “implement new services” on both iOS and Android.
Previously, Sony tried to invest in the mobile gaming market with its PlayStation Mobile development kit for Android, as well as launching the smartphone Xperia Play. Sony PlayStation Portable console also created Life but failed to garner much public respect to competition from Nintendo (for example with the 3DS).
After months spent in reflecting how to balance losses from the console game market, Nintendo has decided in March this year to release its first games for smartphones, Miitomo. The game was a success, becoming the top iOS apps in the category social-networking in Japan on the day it was launched; Miitomo has passed the milestone of 1 million users in just three days. It is a social application that lets users create avatars of themselves and socialize with others in a world virtually.
What will be the first game that Sony will bring the world Playstation on Smartphones? More information should arrive after 1 April.
