Three large German automotive groups, Audi, BMW and Mercedes, announced that they had completed an important purchase that concerns Here. The service Here was purchased for $2.8 billion. Here are some interesting details concerning this operation.
Here in the hands of the Germans
In April 2015 Nokia had already received several interesting proposals regarding selling Here, its mapping service. Who had turned up at the door? Among the great famous names there was even Microsoft, Baidu and Tencent. Even Uber had advanced an interesting proposition: as many as 3 billion dollars. However Nokia, which owns the service had never left tempted by any of these astronomical figures always rejecting the offer.
Soon came into game three big German and world Motorsport as BMW, Audi and Mercedes sounds have changed slightly. The three automakers ‘Made in Germany’ have struck a deal with Nokia.
The possible reasons of the acquisition
Why these big German automakers have decided to acquire the service? An important reason undoubtedly concerns the objective of reducing dependence on automotive suppliers that provide mapping solutions that can be based on Google Maps or more traditional services such as Garmin or TomTom.
Another reason may be the ability to produce in the future the smart car into its own without necessarily having to resort to large technology companies like Google.
